What we do The Renaissance Workshop Company Ltd. is the world's largest specialist manufacturer of Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque musical instruments and musical instrument kits. All our instruments are based on existing originals or the relevant iconography and are hand made by our team of experienced craftsmen. What makes the Renaissance Workshop Company Ltd. unique however is that we also make the same range of Early Music instruments in kit form. Each kit provides all the parts for you to build the instrument and has been designed for ease of assembly. Most do not assume any prior knowledge or experience of instrument making.
Who we are Jonathan Askey founded the Renaissance Workshop Company Ltd. in 1999 with the express purpose of manufacturing Early Music instruments and kits. The company's success is due to its team of dedicated craftsmen: Anthony Calvert, Kishor Mistry, Richard Beall, Claudius Mamczak, Lilly Bennett and Barry Holder, who have many years experience of making musical instrument to the highest standards.

The Renaissance Workshop Company Ltd. 1ft Medieval Portative Organ is a miniature organ of traditional construction in almost every detail. The instrument is supported by a leather strap slung over the shoulder and played with one hand leaving the other free to operate the bellows. The metal pipes operate on only 2 inches of air pressure from the single stroke bellows and produce a clear full sound. Shorter musical passages can be played with ease whilst longer passages are played by 'phrasing' the music to give a space (in the same way a singer takes a breath) to re-charge the bellows. Hand built by 'in-house' craftsmen our finished 1ft Portative Organ is made from selected oak and has a simple pallet action. 12 hand made pipes are individually voiced and tuned before final fitting and setting up of the finished organ. Disposition: 12 notes c' - g''. Size: 18"/14"(46cm/36cm) high, 12"(30cm) wide, 4"(10cm) deep. Weight: 8lbs (3.5kg). Includes leather carrying strap and free access to our 'Helpline' for advice on playing and maintenance. *** The Renaissance Workshop Company Ltd. 2ft Portative Organ is a small organ of traditional construction in almost every detail.
